November First Friday
November First Friday will feature The New Orleans Jazz Stompers. The New Orleans Jazz Stompers (formerly The Dixieland Five) are a Traditional Jazz / Dixieland Band that features a front line of trumpet, clarinet and trombone and a rhythm section of piano, sousaphone, banjo and drums. They play jazz styles of the early 20th century that came from New Orleans and then spread across the country and around the world. We are super excited to have them, as they normally do not perform for free. We would like to thank them for they generosity and ask that you consider throwing them a donation during the event. Leading off the evening will be Athens, singer/song writer McKenna Reckless.
Other notes regarding the event: The weather will be unseasonably warm, but we will have the fire pit going and will have a land based gumbo on hand to bring in a little more of New Orleans!
October First Friday
The first band will be your "host band" Normaltown Music Collective playing their usual mix of music that does not go together., Followed by Alys Willman and John Brocato. (Bio) Of all the musicians in Athens, GA, John Brocato and Alys Willman are definitely two of them. Singer/songwriters with day jobs, they write and perform originals and covers everyone likes (or should). Their dogs prefer Ed Sheeran, but nevertheless they persist in feeding them a steady diet of chunky lyrics with minimal strumming, touching on ageless themes such as youth travel sports, popular Southern side dishes, how to relate to your smart phone and why you don’t want M-16s at dinner. After competing unsuccessfully (but fun-ly) in a song competition earlier this year, they decided to take it on the road for their first annual PorchFest Tour, from Statham to Athens with nowhere in between. They don’t have a name yet and are open to your suggestions. On the side, John plays with The Persians and The Bold O’Donaghues, and Alys sings with the Dragana Balkan choir.
